Team Member Spotlight: Loren Sangrey

Loren Sangrey makes life at St. John’s Herr Estate entertaining. As the Activities Assistant Loren contributes to the well-being of personal care and independent living residents by facilitating many exciting activities at our Columbia community. On any given day you might find Loren leading a terrarium craft, playing a friendly game of cornhole, or lending a helping hand during a campus social.

At St. John’s Herr Estate we offer a variety of activities built to match the diversity of the many personalities and preferences on campus. There are so many activities that people sometimes feel overwhelmed or unsure about participating. When that happens, Loren draws on her bachelor’s degree in psychology and minor in sociology to provide support and understanding. Many times, actions as simple as explaining the rules, giving a demonstration, or offering some inspiration is all residents need to feel ready to engage. Loren recalled one such instance where she encouraged a woman who used to play piano and organ to play even though she insisted that she could not remember. After Loren said a few reassuring words and set her up, the resident played beautifully. “When I see [residents] succeed it makes my day,” Loren said.

Outside of activities, Loren loves connecting personally with residents during one-on-ones, where she gets to catch up and learn more about residents’ interests, histories, and more. “I love their stories, what they have to say, and the knowledge they have to give— it’s so cool to see the things they’ve done,” she said. In addition to forming individual bonds, Loren also introduces residents who have similar interests or backgrounds. Because of her efforts, many have gained friends, activity buddies, and become closer with their neighbors.

Loren was originally drawn to work in senior living by the close relationship she shares with her own grandmother, and a desire to make a difference as a tribute to her grandfather, who didn’t have access to the same opportunities for socialization she now provides others with. Thank you, Loren, for helping to contribute to our thriving community! We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.
