After the dedication in 1966, Luther Acres—A Luthercare Community continued to grow with the opening of the Peacock wing in 1970. This addition was made possible with funds from community leader, industrialist, and benefactor Jacob S. Peacock; and allowed Luther Acres to care for an additional 29 people, for a total of 87 residents.
Later, in 1976, the campus would grow again with the opening of the Luther Townhome Apartments and The Hershey Wing.
Made up of an impressive 96 one- and two-bedroom units, the Luther Townhome Apartments presented a new option for seniors who wished to live independently. At that point admission policies required that applicants be at least 62 years of age, and monthly service fees for all apartments regardless of style were $100.
The Hershey Wing was a one-story connecting building that connected the Luther Townhome Apartments and what was then called the Luther Acres Nursing Care Unit. It was made possible with the substantial bequest of Russel D. Hershey, which was made in memory of Samuel G. Hershey, and Margaret F. Hershey. At the time, the wing contained a dining room, activities center, chapel, offices, music room, and library.
