Shelley Weikel began her career in long-term care over 30 years ago as a social director. Since then, she’s served as a community life director, associate executive director, and assisted living manager—constantly meeting needs, learning new skills, and supporting residents at every turn.
Since June 2024, Shelley has been serving as the Community Life Coordinator at St. John’s Herr Estate. In this role, she ensures that everyone is supported by fostering a growing culture within the community and connecting people with the external resources they need. Day-to-day, Shelley can be found helping out at campus events, providing referrals for specialized services, participating in support groups, driving individuals to appointments, and contributing to community service projects, among other responsibilities.
At the heart of Shelley’s work is her passion for people. She appreciates hearing residents’ stories. “I love to hear what they’ve done in their lives, about their careers, and their children,” she says. This devotion to connection fuels her belief that every person has a purpose. “If you have a pulse, you have a purpose,” she often says. “I truly believe that if you’re still here, God has a plan and a purpose for you, so we always try and find that purpose.”
Outside of her duties at St. John’s Herr Estate, Shelley is especially proud of her two mentees, whom she helped guide from personal care assistants to nurses. Shelley was there for them not just as a professional guide but as someone who provided emotional and practical support through their personal challenges and life changes. One of her mentees is now a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and the other is currently on the path to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).
In every role Shelley takes on, she continually exemplifies the values that guide her life: service, connection, and making a difference in the lives of others. Whether through her professional accomplishments, her mentorship, or the joy she brings to residents, Shelley Weikel’s career is a testament to a life well-lived in service to others. Thank you for your service, Shelley!
