James started with Luthercare in August of 2021 in the Luther Acres Healthcare Center where he worked with memory care residents as a Certified Nursing Assistant. After that, he gained his medication technician certification and transitioned to working with residents in personal care. In previous roles, James had gained valuable listening and assessment skills while working with people who had experienced traumatic brain injuries, as well as those seeking treatment for behavioral health conditions. James made the transition to senior living because he was seeking a more active role in facilitating recovery through the medical aspects of care. “I feel like [nursing presents an] opportunity to really connect with people and meet them where they are in the process” James said.
In his day-to-day work, James acts as eyes on the floor—noticing how residents are doing as he provides necessary hands-on care. Each day he improves residents’ wellbeing by handling medication orders, providing treatments, performing basic procedures, teaching how to use adaptive devices, and assisting with tasks like dressing or grooming. Every action he takes helps to ensure that the environment is comfortable and conducive to success for each resident. “The process of being there with someone and acknowledging what they need is important”, it’s crucial for residents to, “know that they can feel seen and heard” James said.
In the future, James is looking to continue to connect with residents, and has considered expanding his ability to help by studying to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Whatever path he takes, Luthercare is grateful to have his compassion and skill on our team. Thank you, James, for being there for our residents!
