Luther Acres, a Luthercare community, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, is offering a variety of courses for its Winter 2020 “reDiscover A World of Possibilities” program. The courses are one day a week, and some cover a two-, three- or four-week period. All are open to the greater community. Most courses are held on the Luther Acres campus and have varying fees for campus residents and non-residents. The purpose of the “reDiscover” program is to provide an opportunity to learn new things, be creative, enrich minds and have fun!
The courses for Winter 2020 are:
- The Challenge of an Evolving Faith in the 21st Century: This four-week course looks at the ideas inherent in pluralism, secularization and fundamentalism to provoke our thinking and is led by David Myers, a Luther Acres resident and a retired United Methodist Clergy, Pastor, District Superintendent and Prison Chaplain. The sessions are: Thursday, February 6, 13, 20 and 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Create a Ukrainian Egg: Join Instructor Oksana Kerod to create a Ukrainian egg, also called a Pysanky egg. This art dates back to the pre-Christian era when eggs were given as gifts after they were created as a way of sharing the good fortune they were said to have brought. You do not need crafting experience to enjoy this course. The session is: Monday, February 17, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
- Say Cheese!: Come and learn about a variety of cheeses! The classes provide an introduction to cheese, focusing on types, styles, rinds, animals and more, along with an opportunity to touch, smell and taste cheeses. Sessions are: Mondays, February 3 and 10, from 2:00-3:30 p.m.
- Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate!: Join Cary Wells from FLIK Hospitality, Luthercare’s culinary partner, as he creates delicious chocolate treats. Attendees will also receive recipes and enjoy a taste of the final product. Sessions are: Wednesdays, February 12, 19 and 26, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
- Nutrition 101: Session 1, “What’s for Dinner?” discusses meal planning, portion size, food grouping, and the best time of day to eat. Session 2, “The Keto Diet: Is It Right for You?” looks at this popular high-fat, low-carb diet and what you need to know before go Keto. Taught by Luther Acres Wellness Specialist Collean Riehl, sessions are: Wednesdays, February 12 and 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Museums of Lancaster County: Visit some of the wonderful museums that are located throughout Lancaster County. The first trip is to the National Watch & Clock in Columbia on Thursday, February 20. A bus will depart Luther Acres around 12:15 p.m. and leave to return at 3:00 p.m. The second trip, on Friday, February 28, is to the Bible Tabernacle Reproduction at the Mennonite Information Center in Lancaster. A bus will depart Luther Acres around 9:00 a.m. and will stop for lunch before returning.
